Although the desired results appeared similar at first glance, five separate strand tests were required to understand how each client's hair would respond before creating the final colour plans.

The hair was checked after 20 minutes, but there was still too much remaining red pigment present.

The strand tests continued processing for the full 30 minutes before further evaluation.

Testing The Copper Direction

Following the cleansing process, two colour formulas were tested.

Both processed for the full 35 minutes.

Although the results moved closer to the desired direction, there was still more red influence than the inspiration images suggested.

To investigate further, both strands were cleansed again for an additional 20 minutes before being retested.

This allowed us to evaluate how the hair could move closer to the desired copper result while maintaining realistic expectations.

The testing also identified the possibility of balancing the final result using Igora Vibrance 9-7 with a specific developer if additional tonal refinement became necessary.

Client Two: Dark Natural Base With A Vibrant Red Goal

The second client presented a completely different technical challenge.

Although the desired result was also red-based, the starting point was a naturally darker base with inspiration images showing a vibrant red to burgundy finish.

Rather than removing existing colour, the challenge here was determining how best to create brightness and vibrancy from a darker natural starting point.

This required multiple testing approaches before a recommendation could be made.

The first stage involved testing Schwarzkopf Professional Igora Royal Fashion Lights.

These specialist shades are designed to provide lift and colour deposit simultaneously, making them particularly useful on darker natural bases.

These tests allowed us to compare how each Fashion Lights formula behaved against the client's desired result.

When A Perm Appears To Drop — And Why Aftercare Matters

A perm is not just a chemical service.

It is a process that depends on consultation, suitability, testing, preparation, technique, aftercare, and maintenance.

In this case, the client’s journey showed exactly why professional advice matters before and after a texture service.

The Consultation

The client first attended a consultation with Paul on 7 March 2026 to discuss the possibility of a perm.

At THE TRUTH IN COLOUR®, perm consultations are carried out by Paul, as this is a specialist texture service that requires specific experience, assessment, and planning.

Before agreeing to the service, the hair was assessed properly. This is why a consultation should never be treated as a quick chat. This included looking at the hair’s condition, previous history, current maintenance routine, and whether the hair was suitable for chemical texture work.

A SalonLab scan was also carried out to help support the consultation and give a clearer understanding of the hair’s condition.

Healthy-looking hair is not always healthy , which is why condition assessment matters before chemical services.

At this stage, we advised the client to have a haircut first so we could assess the natural movement of the hair and create a stronger foundation before perming.

Professional product advice was also given at this stage.

Why We Did Not Perm The Hair Straight Away

A perm should never be rushed.

Before carrying out chemical texture work, we need to understand how the hair behaves, how much movement is already present, and whether the hair can support the service safely.

The haircut allowed us to reshape the hair and see how it moved before committing to the perm.

This helped us make a more controlled decision rather than treating the perm as a one-step service.

This is also why we measure hair before we promise results .

The Test Curl

On 20 March 2026 , the client returned for a restyle.

During that appointment, a small section of hair that had been removed during the cut was used to perform a test curl.

This allowed us to assess how the hair responded to the perm process before completing the full service.

The test curl was then taken away by the client and washed over the following two weeks so the relaxation rate could be monitored.

Once that period had passed, the client was happy with how the test curl had behaved and booked the full perm appointment.

The Perm Appointment

The full perm appointment took place on 10 April 2026 .

The hair was wrapped, processed, neutralised, and the rods were removed carefully.

The hair was then supported with appropriate styling and diffused dry to encourage the new curl pattern.

The result was a soft, natural curl and the client was very happy with the outcome.

Why Aftercare Matters After A Perm

A perm does not end when the appointment ends.

The long-term result depends heavily on what happens afterwards.

Curl needs the correct balance of moisture, compatible cleansing, and suitable styling support. This is similar to why hair can still feel dry after a treatment if the underlying need has not been properly supported.

If products are too heavy, coating, or not aligned with the service, the curl can become weighed down and appear to relax or drop.

The client was advised to change shampoo and use more suitable aftercare, as the existing shampoo was not appropriate for maintaining the perm result.

When The Curl Appeared To Drop

Around two weeks later, the client contacted the salon to say the hair appeared to have gone straight.

Rather than assuming the perm had failed, the client was asked to return so Paul could assess the hair properly.

During the reassessment, Paul discussed what had been used at home and identified that the aftercare routine had not followed the professional recommendations given after the service.

The hair had been washed using a non-recommended shampoo and styled with products that were not aligned with the perm aftercare advice.

What We Did In Salon

We decided to remove product build-up first.

A professional Schwarzkopf Professional purifying shampoo was used and allowed to sit for five minutes to help remove coating and residue from the hair.

The hair was then cleansed and conditioned using Fibre Clinix Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner , because curly and permed hair needs moisture support to respond properly.

Once the hair had been clarified and rehydrated, we applied mousse and diffused the hair dry.

The Result

The curl response returned clearly.

The hair behaved like freshly permed hair again once the product build-up had been removed and the correct moisture and styling support had been applied.

This showed that the curl had not disappeared.

It had been affected by aftercare and product compatibility.

The Lesson

This case shows why aftercare is not optional.

When a texture service is completed, the products used at home directly affect how the hair behaves.

Professional aftercare is part of the result.
